Ami’s Favorite Screenplays

I believe a person’s preferences can speak volumes about possibilities.  What exists points the way to what is to come.  With that in mind, here is a short (but by no means exhaustive) list of my favorite screenplays, and the remarkable films that the stories became:

The Princess Bride (The ever-quotable William Goldman‘s pitch-perfect storybook story.)

The Pillow Book (I highly recommend the book / text version of this sumptuous, provocative film by Peter Greenaway.  Wow!)

Fight Club (Jim Uhls‘ adaptation mesmerizes.)

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Brilliant — like all of Charlie Kaufman‘s work.  He deftly breaks every screenwriting “rule” with glee.)

The Horseman on the Roof [Le Hussard sur le toit] (Though the subtitles of this gorgeous French film aren’t perfect, I think the story is.  Writing credit goes to Jean-Claude Carriere, Nina Companeez and Jean-Paul Rappeneau in alphabetical, rather than contributing, order.)

Phone Booth (Larry Cohen‘s fantastic single set story exercise.)

Gattaca (Actually, I am a fan of all of Andrew Niccol‘s work… Even “S1m0ne” had its merits.)

Much Ado About Nothing (I love how Kenneth Branagh finds new ways to make Shakespeare relevant.  “Hamlet” may be more powerful and “Love‘s Labor‘s Lost” more artistically daring, but this is the one that really works for me — over and over again.)

The Matrix (Thank God the Wachowski brothers also directed, or much would have been lost in the translation from script to screen.)

Trainspotting (John Hodge‘s relentlessly fascinating storytelling forces us to care for the sort of characters that we‘d really rather not know in real life.)
